Ocean life

These two pieces, inspired by a workshop led by Nerissa Cargill Thompson, depict ocean life (my abstract imaginary take on it) and there's lot of texture in them.

I used paint to make marks on the base fabric, and a lot of recycled fabrics as appliqué and Suffolk puffs, as well as some old lace, ironed plastic netting, couched wool thread, some beads and a fair amount of stitching.

Both pieces will be mounted onto 1 canvas, next to one another. Perhaps part of a future exhibition?

Darning socks

These socks were knitted by my husband's grandmother, who passed away many years ago.

I could never throw them away because they are a labour of love but they got forgotten somewhere in a box in the attic.

When I came across them during a recent cleanup, I decided the time had come to do some serious mending. I used my cute darning tool and some colourful yarn.

I love this job and I love even more that we can use the socks again!

And then I couldn’t stop anymore and went on mending some great shop bought socks 😊:

Mount Hope

Our much-loved tajine broke into pieces. I really wanted to make something from them. The two biggest ones I glued together using the Kintsugi method. I then filled out the sphere with lots of textile balls in different shapes and sizes. This is an idea I got from Clarissa Callesen who often makes artwork using these shapes.

I saw a rocky landscape emerge with a smoking volcano in the distance and added some more golden sparkles with paint and also some wonderful wooden creatures and mushrooms. This miniature world was the result : I call it "Mount Hope".

Make do and mend part 4

My dad's favourite sweater has holes in it, gets glue spilled on it... OK, in a situation like this my creativity is at its happiest : save the sweater! I embroidered some flowers to mend the holes and hide the stain, using some leftover yarn. I think it worked, yay!

Make do and mend part 3

This, admittedly cheap, sweater had started to pill in a terribly ugly way after I'd only worn it a couple of times... I considered turning it into something else, but then again, I like wearing this sweater...so I came up with a solution. I sewed pieces of leftover fabric (in this case leftovers from curtains) onto the sides, where the pilling was really bad. Then I embroidered flowers onto the fabric with some multicoloured cotton yarn. It turned out quite nicely, in a quirkily unique way ;-)

Make do and mend part 2

I love my winter coat. I have been wearing it for more than 5 years. The cuff got really worn though, sooo I decided to mend it with a piece of tartan wool fabric. I think it turned out very well and I am very pleased with it myself : that coat will serve me for another year or two !

Make do and mend part 1

I can't throw anything away... even a badly made pair of cheap socks. Both the socks ripped and were ready for the bin. That was one of these moments I started thinking and planning how to "make it better than before"...
I decided to sew up the tear of each sock with different colours of embroidery thread. To my very humble opinion, my socks are saved and better than before ;-)
